Portuguese Language and Literature
At Babeș-Bolyai University, Portuguese has been taught as an option course since the early 1970s, with courses taught by Marian Papahagi (1972-1999) and, since 2007, by Veronica Manole, initially a fellow at the Camões Institute in Lisbon and later a tenured professor at the Department for Romance Languages.
The Portuguese Language and Literature specialization, accredited in 2020, is the department’s newest bachelor’s degree program. The team brings together specialists in linguistics, Portuguese and Brazilian literature, and translation studies, who also teach practical language courses.
In 2022, following collaboration with the Camões Institute, a native Portuguese lecturer joined the team. This collaboration also made it possible to establish the Camões Portuguese Language Center (room 40 / room 2), which provides students with an updated bibliography and offers students in the program the opportunity to do professional internships. The library’s collection currently includes nearly 2,000 volumes on linguistics, teaching, literature, literary criticism and theory, works dedicated to Portuguese and Lusophone culture and civilization, as well as a substantial series of Portuguese language textbooks for foreigners. Two Fernão Mendes Pinto scholarship holders, Ioana Gîrnod and Anastasia Rădac, are responsible for the management and digitised cataloguing of the book collection, under the coordination of Veronica Manole.
The program has a strong international dimension, offering students the opportunity to undertake Erasmus+ internships at universities in Portugal and Brazil. Starting in 2021, they can also participate in short-term mobility programs within the BIP Ensinar Português Língua Não Materna: Cruzar Experiências, Multiplicar Recursos / Teaching Portuguese as a Non-Native Language: Crossing Experiences, Multiplying Resources program, organized annually at the University of Porto. In collaboration with teachers and specialists from Portuguese-speaking countries (Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique), conferences and lectures dedicated to the varieties of the Portuguese language and Portuguese-language literature are held periodically.
The teaching staff organize events to promote the Portuguese and Lusophone languages and cultures and are actively involved in the cultural life of the city, participating in Cluj Days, book launches, film screenings, and other initiatives. Recent events: https://portughezacluj.ro/noutati/
