Spanish Language and Literature
The study of Spanish was initially optional at the Faculty of Philology in Cluj-Napoca in the 1960s and 1970s. Starting in 1974, this language was granted B specialization status, but it was abusively abolished in the final years of the communist dictatorship. The department was reactivated immediately after the 1989 Revolution, starting with the 1990-1991 academic year, initially with a single first-year group specializing in B, and gradually developed by increasing the number of students enrolled. In 1997, given the ever-growing interest in the study of Spanish, the Romance language with the most speakers worldwide, the Spanish Language and Literature Department, specialization A, was established, which operates in parallel with specialization B.
The Spanish library was established in 1996 following a protocol signed by Babeş-Bolyai University and the Spanish Embassy in Bucharest. The library’s book collection and periodicals consist mainly of donations from the Spanish Embassy, embassies of Latin American countries, and private donations. In 2024, it was integrated into the Loan Section of the Faculty of Letters Library.
Between 1991 and 2012, Spanish lecturers taught at the department under an agreement signed with the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional y Desarrollo. The program was interrupted by the Spanish side, but was resumed in the 2021-2022 academic year.
The department benefits from numerous Erasmus+ partnerships, through which students have the opportunity to study for a semester or an academic year at a prestigious Spanish university. The CEEPUS program is also run through the Red Regional de Hispanistas de Europa Central, allowing students to study for a semester at one of the universities participating in the program.
